We were amazed at how different the policies are for the various cities in the U.S. for recycling moving boxes. The policies can vary drastically from one area of a city to another.

As a general guideline, if you want to recycle moving boxes after you use them, call your local city, and call your local recycling center.

Your local city will tell you about “curbside moving boxes” recycling programs that are sometimes sponsored by the city and sometimes sponsored by a private recycling company.

Be sure to ask them:

  1. Do you have to make a “move-in/move out” appointment for the recycling company to pick up your moving boxes?
  2. How many moving boxes are permitted to be recycled?
  3. Do you need to prepare the moving boxes in any special way? (Some cities you even need to cut them in specific sizes for them to be recycled)

If you live in an apartment, ask your apartment manager the best route to recycle your moving boxes.

Remember, buy recycled moving boxes, and then recycle them again!
